For the first time in recent history DSANA was successful in importing Lacaune semen from Genelex in France in 2017. The semen came from two government supervised ram farms that supply semen to the sheep dairy farms in France that supply the milk for the production of Roquefort blue cheese. DSANA facilitated the purchase of 900 straws ordered by 19 farms throughout the USA. So far, 14 of those farms have done the AI work with some or all of their semen. The reported pregnancy rates have varied between 35% and 83%. To date, approximately 350 lambs have been born and most are healthy and they are being successfully raised. To assist the next round of farms doing AI work with the next round of semen, we plan to publish case studies as to the methods used by certain farms. We hope this information will lead to greater pregnancy success rates in the future.
As the DSANA Genetic Improvement Program gains traction, we will be monitoring the results of our semen importation program. This will take some time but we hope all the farms that have used imported semen participate in this exciting new program, so we can see the actual results and hoped for improvement in profitability at North American Sheep Dairy Farms.
ORDERING LACAUNE SEMEN FOR 2018
We are getting organized to place an order with Genelex for 2018 semen and anyone interested in purchasing semen this year should contact Tom Clark at email@example.com. We expect the order to be placed by the end of June and shipment should take place by the end of July. The cost per straw will be $45.00 and payment will be required in advance. All semen will be shipped to Martin Dally in Oregon and if farms choose to use regional AI technicians, the semen will be shipped from Martin Dally’s inventory to the selected technician.
