A team of researchers described an experiment that was run to determine if a nasal vaccine against parainfluenza 3 reduced the incidence of lamb pneumonia in lambs born and housed indoors in the Cornell flock. In their study, they did not find a reduction in the incidence of pneumonia, but parainfluenza 3 may not have played a role in the cases in that flock.
The effect of IBR/PI3 and Pasteurella vaccination on the mortality rate of high percentage East Friesian lambs - 2002 - Thomas. Higher mortality among lambs with a large proportion of East Friesian genetics had been reported by many and was also a challenge at the Spooner Agricultural Research Station. The majority of losses at the research station had been atrributed to pneumonia. These researchers ran a study to see if vaccination against pneumonia would improve survival. There was no difference in pre-weaning mortality, but there were few deaths in unvaccinated lambs so it was not possible to draw any inferences. Looking at post-weaning mortality, survival was greater for vaccinated (the vaccine being given post-weaning) than unvaccinated lambs when they had high proportions of East Friesian genetics, but there was no difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated lambs with low proportions of East Friesian genetics.
